Yulia Makhalina

Born in 1968 in Leningrad, Yulia Makhalina quickly proved she had what it took to be a great ballerina. She graduated from the Vaganova Choreographic School in 1985 under former Kirov ballerina Marina Vasilieva. She then joined the Mariinsky Theatre that same year and became Principal in 1989.
Ballets that Yulia Makhalina have performed in include; Princess Aurora and La Fee de Lilac in The Sleeping Beauty, Masha in Nutcracker, Giselle and Myrtha Giselle, Kitri in Don Quixote, Medora in Le Corsaire, Odette-Odile in Swan Lake, Nikia and Gamzatti in La Bayadere, Mekhmeneh Bahnu in The Legend of Love, Raymonda in Raymonda, Sylphide in La Sylphide, Soloist in “Paquita” Grand Pas, Maria in The Fountain of Bakhchisarai, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, Zobeide in Sheherazade, Fire Bird in Firebird, Marie Taglioni in Pas de Quatre, Dying Swan, Anna in Anna Karenina, Fairy in Cinderella, soloist in Theme and Variations, Terpsichore in Apollo, IInd movement in Symphony in C, IIIrd movement in In the Night, Carmen in Roland Petits`s Carmen, Countess Alba in Goya-Divertissement, Manon in Manon,  and Youth and Death.

Awards:

  • Won the Grand Prix and Gold Medal at the Fourth International Ballet Competition in Paris and is a recipient of the Italian Prix de Lumiere. 1990
  • Prizewinner of “Benois de la dance” prize, 1998
  • Honored Artist of Russia, 1995
