Welcome to the series “How to teach preschool ballet”. In these videos we are going to talk about what it takes to teach a super fun preschool ballet class from start to finish! Let’s go!
In this video we are going to address preparation when it comes to teaching a preschool ballet class. Specifically creating goals for your classes. There is so much to be done before you even enter a preschool dance class. What are your goals for your class? What are you going to teach? How are you going to teach the material? How are you going to present yourself? These are all elements you need to consider before teaching a class. Let’s go through exactly what you will have to do before your class begins.
First What Are Your Goals? After you have decided you would like to teach a dance class, you need to have clear goals for yourself, your class and your students. I have many goals for myself when I am teaching. For example, I constantly try to be present when I prepare for classes and when I am teaching my classes. This way, I can monitor how I am doing and how I can improve. How can I be a better teacher today than I was yesterday? Taking good care of myself is another goal. I want to feel good when I am teaching. It is fun to be able to keep up with my students and dance and leap around with plenty of energy especially at my age. Am I dressed for class and looking like a dance teacher with the appropriate clothes and shoes. Am I well organized? Do I know my material backwards and forwards? Finally, my last goal is to have fun! Being fortunate enough to be able to enjoy your career is a gift. I know also if I am having fun the students are having fun.
For my classes, I have specific goals as well. When I am planning my classes, I want my curriculum to be fun and engaging. I choose material I think the students will love and will help me teach in the best way. Another goal is I want my curriculum to be original and new. There is always a new dance or activity to share with my classes.
Most importantly, I have goals for my students. The first goal is, I want my students to have fun. The second goal is, I want my students to learn. I want them to learn ballet of course but also how to be in a class. Many preschoolers have never been in a class setting before so we may be the first experience they have. Lastly, I want my students to feel good about themselves in my class. It is not only important to have them learn and have fun but I want to increase their confidence and self-esteem as well.
Having goals and specific intentions are very important when you are going to teach a class of little ones. If you have clear goals everyone will learn and have tons of fun! See you soon for more tips and tricks to make your class extra special!
